RESPONSIBLE TO:  Program Director, Lake Merritt Child Care Center

COMMITMENT (HOURS): Depends on the schedules

STATUS: Non-Exempt (3 months orientation period)

JOB SUMMARY: The Per Diem Teacher is responsible for planning, developing and implementing the preschool program activities to meet the physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of the children in the program.  The Per Diem Teacher provides adequate supervision in all activities, including yard play, center activity, lunch, free play, nap time, etc.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop each child in the classroom, promoting proper social interaction and skill building.
  • Instruct children in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth needed for primary school in preschool.
  • Be consistent and effective in setting and maintaining limits.
  • Observe children and make note of progress, evaluate skill levels of the children and help them develop individually.
  • Supervise children in all activities, maintaining their safety and well-being.
  • Meet with parents for meetings and conferences as needed (Director will also sit in).
  • Maintain a safe, clean, healthy and attractive physical environment with the teaching staff.
  • Plan and develop center curriculum in collaboration with other teachers and the director.
  • Follow program schedule and perform daily activities with children.
  • Provide nutritious snacks and lunches.
  • Provide assistance to other teaching staff.
  • Attend in-service training as needed and regular staff meetings.
  • Report accidents, thefts, child abuse, and other unusual occurrences immediately.
  • Perform other appropriate tasks deemed necessary by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Current Health Screening Report (LIC 503).
  • Current Criminal Record Clearance of Fingerprints.
  • Successfully completed 12 postsecondary semester or equivalent quarter units in early childhood education (ECE) or child development at an accredited or approved college or university. The units shall include courses that cover the general areas of child growth and development, or human growth and development; child, family and community, or child and family; and program/curriculum.
  • 6 months of work experience in a licensed Child Care Center or similar program.

ADA REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Ability to speak, see and hear clearly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, written and oral.
  • Lifting of at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended period.

SALARY RANGE: Depends on experience.
